Swim Challenge

Take on a distance swimming challenge in a pool, open water, or the sea. Accessible, low-impact, and surprisingly powerful as a fundraiser.

Easy2–6 weeksTypical raise: £100–£800

Overview

A sponsored swim is one of the most accessible physical challenges — whether you're doing lengths in your local leisure centre, an open-water lake swim, or something adventurous like a sea crossing, it's a challenge with a clear, measurable goal that supporters love to back.

Distance challenges ("I'm swimming 10km in October") work particularly well because donors can track your daily progress. Post your lap count updates on your Kayana Aid page to keep the momentum going throughout the month.

What you need

  • Access to a pool, lake, or open-water venue
  • A swim tracking app or waterproof fitness tracker
  • A free Kayana Aid fundraising page
  • Appropriate swimwear, goggles, and swim cap
  • Safety buddy or lifeguard awareness for open-water swims

Step-by-step

  1. 01

    Set your distance target

Choose a total distance to swim over your chosen timeframe — monthly distance challenges (e.g. "100 lengths in October") work very well. Make it specific and trackable.

  2. 02

    Create your Kayana Aid page

Set up your page with a photo and personal story. Include your start date, end date, and total distance target so donors can follow your progress.

  3. 03

    Track and share daily

Log each swim session on your Kayana Aid page. Even a brief "Day 5 — 20 lengths done, 80 to go" update keeps donors engaged and often prompts additional donations.

  4. 04

    Cross the finish line

When you complete your final session, post a celebration update with your total distance and a photo. Tag any key sponsors or supporters.

  5. 05

    Thank every donor personally

Send individual thank-you messages to your donors. A personal note goes much further than a generic group message.

Tips & tricks

  • Monthly distance challenges have natural momentum — early donors see the total climb and often top up their donation as you get closer to the target.
  • Open-water and wild swimming events attract attention from local press — contact your local newspaper or radio station.
  • Swimming pools often support local fundraisers with reduced lane fees or even free sessions — it's always worth asking.
  • Post a photo every swim session on your Kayana Aid page timeline. Visual evidence of effort builds donor confidence.
